Summer Jazz Workshop led by Jill Jarman on Sunday 10 August afternoon in POSK

Jill Jarman who has been inspiring the Jazz Choirs at Addison for over 20 years with her enthusiasm for conducting, accompanying and creating wonderful arrangements, will be leading the workshop.

In preparation for the Autumn term theme of “Jazz through the ages”, we will be workshopping:

Idiomatic jazz styles:

“GOSPEL” looking at:
-Phrasing
-How to follow a different type of conducting
-Harmonies like church music
-Bringing in Movement

“Cool jazz” (Miles Davies, Bill Evans)
A simpler harmonic structure with repeated motifs/themes
How might a choir approach this type of music? Let’s find out!

Jazz Ensemble/more musically advanced workshop:
We will also be looking at Gospel music with a different song than the previous workshop and tackling a slightly more advanced harmonic content with ideas on
how to sing Gospel solos!

In addition we will workshop some BEBOP (Charlie Parker, Red Garland) with:
Unison bebop lines – understand how they are constructed and how to make them flow

Bebop lines in harmony – so we can begin to understand why some of the vocal arrangements are written this way

Workshop structure

Two sessions running from 12 until 6pm in the Jazz Cafe at POSK. You must book your session in advance using the ticket link below:
Session 1. Come and sing session – £20
Session 2: Jazz improvisation and ensemble jazz singing for members who can read music – £20
Both sessions: discounted rate of £30 for eligible members.
