Saturday 10th March 2018 @ 7.30pm
St. Katharine Cree, 86 Leadenhall St, London EC3A 3BP
(part of the Brandenburg Spring Choral Festival)
Judith Weir – Ave Regina Caelorum
John Gardner – Five Hymns in the Popular Style
Mozart – Ave verum corpus
Mozart – Requiem (accompaniment arranged for piano duet by Czerny)
The Addison Chamber Choir pay their first visit to the beautiful St Katharine Cree, a Grade 1 listed building, having survived the Great Fire of London, the Second World War and the Baltic Exchange bomb of 1992. The programme revolves around the idea of well known music or texts in new guises – John Gardner’s ‘Five Hymns in the Popular Style’ sets some of the best known words from the English Hymn Tradition, including ‘Fight the good fight’ and ‘Abide with me’ and gives them a new lease of life, with quirky and memorable tunes.
The Addison Singers ‘Featured Composer’ for 2017/18, Master of the Queen’s Music, Judith Weir, brings her unmistakable finger prints to ancient words that celebrate Mary, Queen of Heaven.
Although one of the most frequently performed of all choral works, the Mozart Requiem will be heard with the accompaniment arranged for piano duet by the Austrian pianist and composer and Beethoven pupil, Carl Czerny. This has been very rarely heard anywhere in the two hundred years since Czerny made the transcription and though hardly offered as a replacement for the conventional orchestral original, it does give an alternative and fascinating glimpse at one of the iconic works of Western music.
